About our Colorado Springs Family Law Practice

Practice Area - Colorado Divorce & Family Law

Our firm's family law practice represents clients in the Colorado Springs / El Paso County region, exclusively in the area of Colorado family law, including Colorado divorce, legal separation, annulment, paternity, child custody & support, military divorce issues and grandparent rights. We do not handle adoptions, guardianship, or dependency & neglect cases.

Initial Consultation

No lawyer can afford the time commitment necessary to talk to everyone who needs help. We offer a reduced rate $150 initial consultation for one hour. During our meeting, we tell you what you need to know with real answers, not fluff or a sales pitch, like many attorneys do. I am not going to waste your time or mine - if you can handle a case yourself, we'll explain how. If you need a Colorado Springs divorce or family lawyer, we'll try to give you an estimate of what it would cost.

Our office is conveniently located downtown just 200 meters north of the county courthouse (see map for location and parking information). To allow time to fill out the intake form, please arrive 5 minutes early. Make sure you bring all relevant documents, such as the petition or any motion you've received, or if your case is post-decree, a copy of your decree and any post-decree modifications or orders.

Clients Outside of Colorado Springs

As long as you have an El Paso County divorce or family law case, we can represent you even if you don't live in Colorado Springs. For your initial consultation, simply send us your initial intake forms and any other documents relevant to your case, by fax (please no more than 20 pages), e-mail, or regular mail. We'll review them before our consultation, which we can then do telephonically.

We have completed cases for many out-of-state clients whom we've never met in person, in other states, as well as in countries such as Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea, Italy, Australia and others. Thanks to modern technology, such as faxes, telephones, and, especially, e-mail, and the ability to participate telephonically in most Colorado family court proceedings, we can finalize many family law cases without an out-of-state client having to show up in person.

If your case involves a contested Colorado child custody issue, you generally have to be here personally, at least for the hearing. And, there may be other situations where a judge requires personal appearance, or where a closely-fought issue means it is better for the Colorado family law judge to be able to look you in the eye, rather than being just a voice on the telephone. As your attorney, we'll let you know if your personal presence would help your case.

Intake Form

If you already have a consultation scheduled and will be participating telephonically, click on either the MS Word or Adobe Acrobat icon below to download the intake form. Fill out both pages (by hand usually works better than trying to type in the form), then send them to our office, along with all relevant documents, such as the petition or any motion you've received, or if your Colorado springs family law case is post-decree, a copy of your decree and any post-decree modifications or orders.

Fees & Retainer

Cases are handled hourly, at $240 per hour for attorney time, and $105 per hour for paralegal time, billed from a retainer deposited in advance by the client. The retainer is typically $6000 for divorce, annulment, or legal separation, and $3500 for other cases (child custody/support, post-decree modifications, paternity, grandparent rights, etc).

These retainers are realistic, not an artificially-low bait & switch which the attorney knows cannot cover your case. And, when your Colorado family law case is over, if the retainer exceeds the fees, you get a refund. If the fees deplete the retainer, more money will need to be deposited. Major credit cards are accepted, and ask about our military rates.
